Dominican Ambassador to India, Hans Dannenberg signed a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi on 13 March, a first step towards establishing diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of Bangladesh. High commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Tariq A. Karim signed on behalf of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has 165 million inhabitants and is seen as a huge market with potential for trade in raw materials and textiles. Dannenberg said that thanks to a vote from Bangladesh last September, the DR became a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. Moreover, Bangladesh is recognized for sending a peacekeeping contingent to Haiti to reinforce the UN troops after the January 2010 earthquake.

Dannenberg says that the agreement continues President Leonel Fernandez and Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso's policy of diversifying the country's international diplomatic ties. Under that policy, the Dominican Republic has established diplomatic relations with nearly 50 nations in Asia, Africa and Oceania in the last five years and boosted the country's presence in international bodies and especially among emerging economies.

Dannenberg says that agreements need to be signed only with Pakistan, Myanmar and the Kingdom of Bhutan to complete the DR's diplomatic relations with South Asian nations.
