The Central Bank stated yesterday Tuesday, 13 March that inflation in February, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 0.35% up over January.

El Dia reports that for the first two months of this year inflation stands at 0.79% compared to 2.46% for the same period last year, evidenced by a slowing down in price increases.

According to the Central Bank, the annualized rate of inflation over the last 12 months, February 2011 to February 2012, stands at 6% with the underlying level at 4.35%.

The report showed that the increase was due in the most part to a rise in the prices of food, non-alcoholic drinks and transport, which went from 0.61% to 0.66% accounting for 79.49% of the inflation figure due to its high weighting in the family basket

There was a drop of -0.26% in the Housing index due to a -1.66% reduction in the cost of gas for domestic use.

The main increases for the month were green plantains (2.93%), fresh chicken (1.33%), sour limes (33.07%), avocados (9.33%), red onions (6.01%), green bananas (3.89%), salami (1.20%), tomatoes (13.31%), and soya oil (0.52%). There were price reductions for eggs (-1.87%), garlic (-6.51%), brown sugar (-1.41%) and cassava (yuca) (-1.11%).

Regular gasoline increased by 2.25%, premium gasoline by 2.26% and diesel by 2.19%. However liquid petroleum gas decreased by -1.66%.
