According to a study released by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) remittances sent to the Dominican Republic reached US$3.131 billion in 2011, an increase of 7.7% over 2010.

This placed the Dominican Republic in fifth place amongst countries that receive remittances. First place was Mexico with US$22.731 billion, followed by Guatemala with US$4.377 billion, Colombia with US$4.168 billion, and El Salvador with US$3.65 billion.

According to the report, remittances can make up as much as 5% of GNP in countries like the Dominican Republic, and many families would fall below the poverty line without this income.

The statistics showed that migrants from Latin America and the Caribbean, most of whom live in the US, sent around US$61 billion back to their countries of origin last year, 6% more than in 2010, as reported in acento.com.do.
