The National Police established yesterday, Wednesday 14 March, that a Haitian man, Yoel Geffrard, who was killed by two bullets on the campus of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) on Monday afternoon, 12 March, had links to international drug trafficking. The investigators also discovered that last year Geffrard was kidnapped by a gang called Los Kilos, which is said to control all drug trafficking operations in Haiti, but somehow managed to get away. This information came from a Police interrogation of the victim's wife, whose name is being withheld for her protection.

The National Police said that Geffrard ran into the campus in order to protect himself from his "executioners," who had intercepted him in front of the Medical Faculty (the old Marion Hospital). "But apparently there were a lot of people around and they could not carry out their mission." The police investigators are also working on the hypothesis that the men who killed Geffrard received a large payment. From the very day of the tragedy, the Police ordered an alert in the ports and airports in an attempt to prevent the escape of the hit men, who are believed to have been hired in Haiti.

Yesterday National Police spokesman General Maximo Baez Aybar told reporters that investigations were under way and that they expected to have more information within the next few hours, as well as evidence that will lead the investigators to the arrests of the persons responsible. It was also established that Geffrard entered and left the Dominican Republic with ease and was responsible for a good part of the cocaine that enters Dominican territory along the border, especially in the southern region.
