Reverend Father Juan Linares, founder of "Boys and Girls with Don Bosco" and Dona Olga Gonzalez, president of the Fight against Cancer Council in the Cibao, have been selected by the Qualifying Jury as the Man and Woman of the Year 2011. The prestigious prizes, sponsored by Diario Libre, will be awarded during a gala dinner to be held at the El Embajador Hotel, starting at 8pm this evening, Thursday, 15 March.

Father Linares, born in Salamanca, Spain, arrived in the country in the mid-1970s. He started working at the Don Bosco School, where he was able to witness the reality of hundreds of helpless children with an uncertain future. Ten years later, together with a group of young Salesians, he established an educational and pastoral program that helped them to contribute directly to the development of our society. And so in 1986, the "Paperboys with Don Bosco" was born, and today the program is known as "Boys and Girls with Don Bosco," a program that provides schooling, arts, and recreation to hundreds of children and young adults, both in Santo Domingo as well as in other parts of the country, helping them to become useful citizens.

Dona Olga Gonzalez began her work as a volunteer in the Women's Branch of the Cibao Council against Cancer 44 years ago. Although to begin with the group only had one ward with four beds in the Jose Maria Cabral y Baez Hospital in Santiago, today they have their own hospital with 150 beds, where they provide chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgeries to patients with few if any resources in the Cibao region. Part of her work has consisted of preparing educational programs aimed at raising public awareness of the illness.
