The administrative manager of DP World's Caucedo Multimodal Port Jose Nelton Gonzalez has announced that as of 22 March 2012, the global shipping lines NYK, Hanjin, Evergreen and Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) will be using the Dominican Republic as transit operations center for container shipments between North and South America, as reported in El Caribe. Gonzalez said the port is making preparations to make the most of the completion of the Panama Canal expansion in 2014.

The port, located near Las Americas International Airport to the east of Santo Domingo, now handles around 25 container ships a day, for around 1,300 ships a year. The port has a sophisticated security system, with 108 cameras and built-in motion-activated sensors. The port has invested over US$5 million in security measures. The port, which uses optic character recognition systems and GPS tracking equipment for container monitoring and general security, received the ISO/PAS 28000 security standard and is a member of the Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT) initiative by US Customs and Border Patrol.

The port has the capacity to handle 1,250,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) annually. An expansion completed in 2011 increased 300 meters of deepwater berth and two new broad yield mobile cranes in addition to the existing five Post-Panamax Gantry Cranes. The port now has three deepwater berths with a total length of 922 meters. Berths have 13.5 meters of depth alongside.

The terminal area covers an area of 50 hectares with a capacity for storing 30,000 containers.

The announcement was made during a press visit to the Dubai Ports port yesterday, Thursday, 15 March hosted by Eddy Martinez, director of the Center for Investment and Export of the DR (CEI-RD) and Anibal Pina, vice president of the Association of Shippers.

The Multimodal Port is a more than US$400 million investment. See http://caucedo.com/index_en.php
