Taking part in the XII International Cardiology Congress, cardiologist Pedro Diaz, the former president of the Dominican Cardiology Society, said that around 75% of the Dominican population does no physical exercise of any type. He said that this was a contributory factor towards heart disease, which is responsible for 60% of all the deaths in the world.

He said that it was a concern that in the last ten years, high blood pressure had increased and was no affecting 35% of the population, and in addition obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol had all increased, all of which are important risk factors in heart disease.

He said that people were becoming more and more sedentary, walking less and less, that they were taking the Metro and more taxis when they should be taking more physical exercise. Referring to a recently published study on the Factors for Cardiovascular Risks, he said it stated that only 25 % of the population walked anywhere, 31% were overweight and that nearly 50% of the population could be considered to be obese, as reported in Listin Diario.
