Military suspect in 807.4-kilo cocaine shipment

The National Drug Control Department says it has not established the identity of the owner of the 807.4 kilos of cocaine that were confiscated at dawn in a container at the Caucedo Multimodal Port on Wednesday, 14 March. Diario Libre reports that the DNCD arrested Navy second lieutenant Sandy de Leon Melendez, who was stripped of his rank, and civilian Jose Altagracia Basora Sanchez in connection with the case. Five others are said to be under arrest. The shipment was distributed in 23 packs and was to have been sent to the Spanish port of Valencia by Cuevas & Hermanos, C. por A., located in the Zona Franca Especial Marmolejos, in Villa Gonzalez, Santiago province. DNCD intelligence officers have been in contact with their counterparts in Spain to find out who was to have received the cocaine shipment.
