A group of young people held a protest this morning, Monday 19 March at the Barrick Gold offices in Santiago Domingo, calling for a ban on the use of cyanide in mining in the Dominican Republic. They expressed solidarity with mining conflicts in Latin America and called for a ban on cyanide as has already happened in Costa Rica. The European parliament has called for an outright ban on the use of cyanide in gold processing.

"Open pit mega mining is an activity that because of its enormous scale brings environmental impacts, such as the destruction of forests, massive consumption of clean water and electric energy, and the results in production of acid drainage and especially because of the use of highly toxic substances in large quantities," they complained. They said that one of the worse substances is cyanide that will be used in the Pueblo Viejo mine to process 24,000 tons of minerals every day.

As reported in Hoy, they said that cyanide has caused terrible disasters in many parts of the world eliminating all aquatic life forms in kilometers of rivers and poisoning people and degrading fresh water sources.

Barrick communications director Jorge Esteva spoke to the protestors, arguing that the operation had taken precautions to not damage the environment
