The Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development together with the Ministry of Women have joined forces for the enactment of the National Plan for the Prevention of Pregnancies in Teens. With lots of big words, the inauguration ceremony held at the office of the Deputy Minister for Planning featured Dr. Indiana Barinas who said that the plan has a mission to create and strengthen the mechanisms for preventing these pregnancies "guaranteeing equal opportunity for human development among adolescents, and promoting safe, pleasurable and responsible sex."
In 2011 around 11,000 adolescents (32% of the pregnancies attended) were between 13 and 18 years of age and received treatment at the La Altagracia Maternity Hospital in Santo Domingo, the largest Dominican maternity hospital. Teen pregnancies are the third cause of death among females in the country. Dr. Barinas says that the death rate among teenagers has gone down in relation to previous years.
