Election talk in the DR is skirting the issues. While the candidates of the leading two parties, the Dominican Liberation and the Dominican Revolutionary, have centered their debates on the issue of corruption, the population is now calling for a change. Different sectors argue the politicians need to focus on their future government programs, proposals and solutions to the evils that affect the country.

Servio Tulio Castanos Guzman, the executive vice-president of Finjus, said that at the present time the debate has been limited to pointing out which one of the two parties is the greatest thief, and society does not want the discussions to go in that direction. In his judgment, issues such as citizen safety, police reform, the corruption looked at from the point of view of the policy to be applied to fight it, the Public Defender, as well as a real anti-crime policy, are points that should be addressed by the candidates.

"From the institutional point of view, there is an agenda pending and in those key points are what I believe the debates should concentrate upon," he noted in allusion to the government's Danilo Medina and the opposition's Hipolito Mejia.
