The price increases for all fuels except LPG have caused prices to go up across the board for most items, bringing complaints from housewives and even the sales people. This is because the vast majority of the trucks that haul the produce from the farms to the markets are fueled with diesel, and diesel has gone up in price every week for the past month. Reporters from the Nuevo Diario toured wholesale markets, in order to get a grasp on just how big the price increases have been.

Different sellers complain of increases of over 10% in just one week. The increases cover everything from plantains to tayotas, with products like tomatoes going up as much as 25% at the wholesale level.

In the meantime, the price of the benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil ended the first day of the trading week up US$2.24, going over the US$100 mark, and ending at US$100.91. This is the first time since mid-January that the price has been over the one hundred dollar mark.
