The Plaza de la Bandera (Flag Square) will now be called the Plaza de la Bandera y El Soldado Desconocido, in honor of the heroes who fought anonymously for the country.

The Minister of the Armed Forces attended a mass in the church of Our Lady of Altagracia where the remains of the Unknown Soldier were lying in the chapel of rest, which were then taken to the Plaza de la Bandera. The Fernandez administration recently remodeled the plaza at a reported cost of RD$400 million to taxpayers.

The president of the National Commission for the Commemoration of Patriotic Events, Juan Daniel Balcacer said that it was a solemn moment so that the present day and future generations could honor the memory of the unknown martyrs who had lost their lives in times of war to defend the democratic system, public freedom and national independence.

A series of activities took place such as the laying of earth carried from the four corners of the country to symbolize national unity, the blessing of the tomb, the handing over of the flag and lighting the eternal flame by the Vice President of the Republic Rafael Alburquerque and the Minister of the Armed Forces General Joaquin Virgilo Perez Feliz, as reported in Listin Diario.
