Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and religious groups in the Dominican Republic and Haiti are calling for the authorities to put a stop to the trafficking of men, women and even children across the border at Dajabon. The Jesuit Migration and Refugee Service and the Solidarite Fontwalve group from Ouanaminthe (Juana Mendez) told local media that over 3,300 Haitians were trafficked illegally across the border in February. In the same context, El Nuevo Diario says that the Human Rights Commission for the northern region of the Dominican Republic issued a statement saying that the country could be subject to international sanctions if the human trafficking is not halted. The Jesuits said that people were being taken across the border at other points, mentioning that Mechor and Capotillo were also being used. They said that some women falsely claim to be the mothers of the children who are being taken into the Dominican Republic, and that parents often don't know where their children have been taken.
