Various sectors have criticized PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia for saying yesterday Thursday, 22 March that when he took over as President he would not pay money owed by the previous government.

Ligia Bonetti, the president of the Dominican Republic Industrial Association (AIRD) said that she thought he was joking, or that his comments were taken out of context, as governments were obliged to honor promises made by the prior administration.

Wadi Cano, president of the Federation of Industrial Associations (FAI) said it was inappropriate and sent a negative sign to creditors across the country.

The leader of the organization of small and medium-sized businesses said that all outstanding payments should be audited and any that were illegal should be decided on by the courts, but that there should not be nonpayment as it would damage the country's credit rating and create a critical situation among the small and medium sized businesses.

The Minister for the Presidency, Cesar Pina Toribio attributed Mejia's remarks to his ignorance about the responsibility of the continuity of the State and the president of the Dominican Federation of Small and Medium businesses (Codopymes) said that the comments were worrying and that various members had been calling him to express their concern.
