More than 20 flights were cancelled by Air Canada today, Friday 23 March, after some of the airline's ground workers walked out on a wildcat strike.

The union said the incident began around 10:30pm Thursday 22 March when Canadian Minister of Labor Lisa Raitt walked through the airport and a few employees clapped and cheered sarcastically and were then suspended, Canadian media reported today, Friday, 23 March.

Other workers then walked off the job in reaction to the suspensions, he said.

Many passengers said they had no idea where their luggage was, or how they were going to get to their destinations. One passenger described the situation at the airport as "a zoo."

Aaron Huizing was heading back to his home in Ottawa from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic when the walkout began.

Huizing, who was travelling with a group of 30 people, said he never should have booked a vacation with the airline.
