El Nuevo Diario carries a story from the United States, where investigators from the New York police Robbery Department suspect that a Dominican known as the "Vaseline Thief" is responsible for robbing apartments in Upper Manhattan over the past few weeks. He is so named as he uses petroleum jelly to cover the spyhole in the doors. Luis Gonzalez, 40 was identified by means of a security camera and the police are actively looking for him, after receiving dozens of complaints from Dominican victims.
On 11 October 2011, Gonzalez, supposedly robbed four apartments in Harlem and Inwood in Upper Manhattan, taking electrical equipment, jewelry and cash.
On 13 February and 8 March he robbed more apartments but he was unable to gain entry on his last attempt last Monday.
