The president of Haiti arrived at the Presidential Palace at 12:10 yesterday afternoon, Monday, 26 March, and was received on the main stairs by his host, Leonel Fernandez. Martelly was welcomed with the military honors corresponding to his status and the two presidents then reviewed the First Regiment of the Presidential Guard.
A few minutes later the work of the Mixed Commission began and later Fernandez awarded Martelly with the Order of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella with the Large Gold Cross.
In his thank you address Martelly said: "This meeting that we had is the expression of the spirit of mutual cooperation, assistance and brotherhood that should always mark the relations between the two countries," after commenting that Fernandez is a model leader to be imitated.
He said that the relations between the two countries, although affected by ups and downs that can be considered a family quarrels, have provided a broad-based solidarity. "Geography forces us to cultivate coexistence for the welfare of our respective populations," he said. The Haitian president used the occasion to remind reporters of the solidarity that Haiti showed the Dominican Republic after the San Zenon hurricane in 1930.
