President Leonel Fernandez has issued Decree 133-12 naming the new cancer facility under construction as the Rosa Emilia Tavarez National Cancer Institute. The hospital honors several decades of work by Tavarez towards making available low-cost quality cancer treatments. In the same decree, Fernandez appointed oncologist Catalina Gonzalez Pons as general director of the institute. Dr. Gonzalez, who directed the Dominican Cancer League, Inc for over 14 years, recently resigned from the board of the institution. In Decree 134-12, President Fernandez created the management board of the hospital that will be chaired by the Minister of Public Health. The board vice president will be the hospital director. Other members are the rector of the UASD, a representative of the Catholic Church, Evangelical churches in the area, two medical doctors and a business sector representative. The decree says that the government will fund the construction and contribute towards equipment and maintenance. It establishes that the board will be able to seek donations for the center. The decision means that the Dominican Cancer League, after operating privately for decades, will be merged with the new institution.
The hospital is under construction by the Office of Supervisory Engineers of the Presidency (OISOE).
