Betting parlors and gangs in Cienfuegos

The quality of life in Cienfuegos, one of the largest barrios in the country, in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, is being upset by the racket, noise and disturbances created by a series of well known locations and undesirable individuals. The locations are sports betting parlors, billiard halls, and the infamous "colmadones" - corner shops with large speakers and loud music - as well as the drug sales points run by local gangs. According to Hoy newspaper, the church community program Children with Hope reported that these places keep multiplying and disturbing the neighborhoods, apparently without any control. The pastor, Pablo Urena, told reporters that there was a need to put a stop to the spread of these places since they send a negative message to the youth. He suggested that the barrio needed family parks, sports and culture. 'Children with Hope' has been working with children in the barrio for eight years.
