This morning's 3.4 quake brings to 17 the number of quakes measuring 3.0 or more since 5 January, according to Hoy newspaper. One that measured 3.1 was registered in the Mona Passage and yet another one, reported on DR1, measured 3.4 on the Richter scale. Eleven of these tremors occured in January when people were shaken and reminded of the terrible earthquake that ripped apart Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area in 2010.

El Caribe says that the largest of the local earthquakes was a 5.3 centered in San Jose de Ocoa, which caused cracks in some buildings. The authorities reported no injuries. In January the province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua) reported five earthquakes and led to questions about just how well prepared the country is for a major seismic event. The Dominican College of Engineers and seismic specialists are calling for a large-scale initiative to inspect and reinforce public buildings like schools and hospitals.
