In an interview with El Caribe, Frente Amplio presidential candidate Julian Serulle says the pillars of his government program will be education, farm production, industry and security. He called for investing in educating men and women so they can integrate into national production. He says the government has to back farm producers and agro-industry. He would be a firm supporter of small and medium-sized business, making available financing and soft credit. "We have to teach them to work and offer soft loans so as not to drown industry and micro business with the taxes that are a rising burden. We need to find taxes that are productive and reproductive for the country," he said. He called for a security plan to bring about a radical change in the Police, to turn this into an honorable institution, that works side by side with the citizens, that is better trained and better paid.

"If you don't educate, then there will be violence even if you have the best Police," he pointed out. He said there was a need for more respect to the laws. He said that if he is elected, he could bring about drastic change in four years, and mentioned the cases of Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva in Brazil and Juan Bosch in the Dominican Republic in 1963. He said that the foreign debt was paid in seven months in 1963. "What is needed is political will, love of the people, and to leave aside individualism and personal ambitions," he said.

"We have had people who think that politics is a business that they use to seek their economic and social advancement," he said. He called the PLD party members "thieves of rights" who have stolen from the population their right to learn how to read and write, work, eat and receive potable water.

He favors foreign investment, but believes foreigners need to contribute their technological advances.

Julian Serulle is running with Fidel Santana as his vice presidential candidate.
