The police are investigating the murder of a man who was a witness in the case against an official of the Popular Front Party (FALPO) in Navarrete.

Braulio Vargas, a former spokesman for Falpo in Navarrete, was accused of killing Rodriguez' cousin in December 2009, and was subsequently sentenced to 20 years in jail for murder. He is currently serving his time in Rafey prison in Santiago.

The victim was identified as Victor Alfonso Rodriguez, aged 27 who testified against Braulio, and according to witnesses, Rodriguez was shot four times by four hooded men near the Navarrete municipal cemetery early on Tuesday morning, 27 March.

Vargas is appealing against his sentence and the hearing is due to take place today, Wednesday 28 March.

The spokesman for the National Police in Cibao, Colonel Lorenzo Morillo said that officers from the Criminal Investigation and Homicide Department were investigating a man who was with the victim when he was shot.

However, the victim was known in the underworld as Kila and was a member of the Los Quirinos gang, giving the police two possibilities for his murder.

FALPO has protested outside the Courthouse in Santiago and had various strikes and marches in Navarrete and Licey Al Medio demanding the release of Braulio Vargas, saying that he is innocent of all charges.
