With Holy Week just around the corner, the country's public safety agencies are announcing plans to make the Easter vacation safer for the hundreds of thousands of people who will be on the move. Listin Diario and El Nuevo Diario both report on these safety measures.

The National Police have announced that 14,000 agents will be watching beaches, swimming areas and other recreational venues as well as the highways. The Public Health Ministry announced the start of a plan for prevention and education during the week in order to prevent infectious diseases like cholera and dengue, and the regional director of Civil Defense of San Francisco de Macoris, Rafael Almarante reported that 3,000 CD brigade members would work on safety at the beaches and highways in the Northeast.

The Naval Auxiliary and AMET traffic police will join in the prevention of accidents both on the water and on the highways. While the biggest push will begin on Wednesday 4 April, some movement of travelers will be starting this weekend (Palm Sunday) as local schools end classes tomorrow, many until the Tuesday following Easter.
