News of the appointment of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) to the Administrative Board of the Rosa Emilia Tavares National Cancer Institute has exposed a conflict between the sectors that make up the institution. Curiously, the university wants to head up the direction of the health center that will be inaugurated later this year.

Yesterday, Wednesday 28 March, the UASD authorities asked President Leonel Fernandez to reformulate the decree creating the Administrative Board, so that the academic institution would form part of the management of the new hospital, which they also believe should be a teaching hospital.

The vice-rector for Research and Post Graduate Studies and the interim rector, Francisco Vegazo, said that the use of the term "consultancy" does not make it clear what the UASD role would be on the Administrative Board.

Vegazo said that it is inconceivable for the new center that was built on university lands. He wants the center to be a "university hospital" and sees it as an opportunity to trengthen the Health Sciences Faculty. "Our university trains more than 50% of the health professionals needed for providing integrated health services, the administrative management of the national health service and the creation of the conditions for maintaining the high quality of a professional product that allows the Dominican state to comply with international health standard requirements," said Vegazo. He added that the decree does not do justice to the repeated references that the President of the Republic has made to this hospital, such as "University Hospital" and the "UASD Hospital."

In the meantime, the Dominican League against Cancer, which the decree grants the vice-presidency of the council, has still not expressed its public position on the issue, but they have let it be known that there is a possibility that they might not take part in the direction of the health center. Dr. Catalina Gonzalez Pons, a former president of the Dominican League against Cancer board has been appointed to direct the new center.
