Although Law 87-01 that created the Dominican Social Security System establishes that the government should also install daycare centers when the Family Health Insurance comes into effect, the country only has 123 such centers caring for 7,037 children under the age of five.
El Nuevo Diario quotes Dr Liliam Rodriguez, the director of Daycare Centers for the Dominican Social Security Institute Health Security program as saying that the country needs hundreds more.
Speaking to Pablo McKinney on his Channel 37 talk show, the doctor said that the IDSS currently runs 44 daycare centers and another 79 are co-managed with other entities.
