Santo Domingo Mayor Robert Salcedo has announced the temporary closure of a central section of the Malecon seafront boulevard to make room for city residents' Easter Week entertainment. From Wednesday, 4 April to Sunday, 8 April the Malecon between Jose Maria Heredia street and Maximo Gomez Avenue, will be converted into a giant extension of Plaza de Guibia, with sand, palm trees, 12 portable swimming pools, sun loungers, basketball and volleyball courts, all monitored by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET), and the national municipal and tourist police.

There will also be sporting competitions and areas for skating, cycling and other recreational and sporting activities.

The Malecon will be closed to traffic between Jose Maria Heredia Street and Maximo Gomez Avenue from 6am on Wednesday 4 April to Sunday, 8 April. Traffic in the area is usually significantly lighter because the week is a major vacation period for Santo Domingo residents.

Salcedo said the plan is to create a beach-like environment in the city for low-income families. The swimming pools are intended for children, but there will also be tables for playing dominoes, chess, and beach volleyball.

Once Easter Week is over the Malecon will return to its original state and traffic will go back to normal.
