In its latest report published yesterday, Thursday, 29 March, the United Nations Human Rights Committee, calls on the Dominican Republic authorities to end police brutality, particularly in the country's jails, as well as the discrimination against Haitians and their descendants.

The document stated that the police should respect human rights, be better trained and have adequate salaries and that the Dominican state should have an independent and impartial mechanism in place to investigate all cases of police brutality, particularly in the jails, even if the victims did not issue a complaint.

The committee did not consider that the Dominican Republic respects the rights of immigrants, especially Haitians, and according to the Argentinean lawyer, Fabian Salvioli the state should ensure that cases of discrimination are systematically investigated, and that those who committed them are brought to justice and punished.
