Following the murders by stabbing of two inmates within 72 hours in the Santa Rosa de Lima jail in La Romana, the Prison authority has replaced the military head of the jail.
Colonel Joaquin Cruz is the new head of the prison, replacing Colonel Narciso Made who is accused of dereliction of duty and cowardice. The jail, which was built for 280 inmates, now holds more than 790, but the prosecutor in La Romana, Jose Polanco, said that the deaths were isolated incidents.
Once he took command, Colonel Cruz started cell searches and as the prisoners did not want to give up their drugs and arms, the occupants of three cells set fire to their mattresses. The fire brigade was called to the scene and extinguished the fire, as reported in Listin Diario.
