Dominican-born Julissa Reynoso, formerly Deputy Assistant Secretary for Central America and the Caribbean in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the Department of State, will be the new United States ambassador to Uruguay. Prior to joining the US State Department, she had practiced law Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in New York, focusing on international arbitration and antitrust law. She was also a fellow at New York University School of Law and Columbia Law School. In an interview with VOXXI, Reynoso recalls migrating with her family to the Bronx in 1982, at a time she described it was "pretty much the worst place in the US in terms of inequality and poverty." She holds degrees from Harvard University, University of Cambridge in the U.K., and a J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. Reynoso had been appointed by President Barack Obama on 17 October 2011, but it was not until last week that the US Senate approved the nomination.
