The Dominican Republic has set a new Guinness world record for reading aloud for the longest period, after reading for 1,000 hours in a Youth Reading Marathon held for this purpose. The last 15 minutes of the reading were completed by President Leonel Fernandez himself, as he read from Article 85 to Article 101 of the Dominican Constitution in the Cariatides Room of the Presidential Palace, in the presence of many of the young people who took part in the marathon. The feat, began 20 February and took 42 days and was held in 155 towns all over the country.

When the reading was concluded, the judge from Guinness World Records, Johanna Hessling, delivered the certificate confirming the record achieved by the country to President Leonel Fernandez at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Monday, 2 April. The Dominican Republic broke the former record of 365 hours, 39 seconds, set by five Dominican young people in 2011. This time it took 930 students 42 days to reach the 1,000-day mark. The students started to read out loud for one hour, four minutes and 30 seconds each on 20 February. The President's final 15 minutes brought the II Youth Reading Marathon to a successful conclusion. The marathon used the motto: "For God and Country".
