Celso Marranzini, executive vice president of the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) says that in the past eight years generation capacity has doubled in the DR, and that the nation has the capacity to provide 24-hour service to all, but that the problem is that many do not want to pay for the service, or quality of transmission lines. "The Dominican Republic is self-sufficient in electricity production," he said, speaking during a panel discussion on the electricity sector in the past two Fernandez administrations, as reported in El Dia. During the panel discussion, Enrique Ramirez, president of the National Energy Commission (CNE) announced that within two or three months the country will be producing 800 megawatts from renewable sources, which will have a positive impact on the petrol bill.

Electricity Superintendent Juan Bautista Gomez pointed to a reality that anyone who has visited the power distribution offices and Consumer Protection Department (Protecom) can confirm. Electricity complaints are down, to reflect customers are getting better service. What's more, electricity is now low on the list of problems mentioned by Dominicans in the polls conducted in the run-up to the 20 May 2012 presidential election.
