The Dominican ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Mario Arvelo Caamano, and a Chilean, Oscar Godoy, have been elected vice presidents of the 32nd Regional Conference of the UN FAO for the 2012-2014 term. The selection took place at a meeting headed by Argentina's deputy minister of Agriculture Lorenzo Basso, who is the president of the FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (LARC) that took place in Argentina from 26-30 March 2012.
Arvelo said that the LARC conference debated regional priorities in sustainable development, increase in food production, and climate change challenges for the next two years. He stated that the global community should pay more attention to the FAO's work in Haiti, and called for an increase in funding for Haiti. Arvelo is the DR's permanent representative at the FAO, based in Rome.
