The sentence handed down to the Dominican Republic by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) for the disappearance of university professor Narciso Gonzalez (Narcisazo) in May 1994 has generated a variety of reactions. The IACHR imposed a fine of US$393,200 for negligence in investigating his disappearance.

The government said yesterday, Tuesday, 3 April that the sentence was unjust and that it had come from elements that wanted to damage the country economically. Prosecutor for the National District, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, commented that it was an embarrassment for the country, and that the judgment was regrettable, although she acknowledged that the country had done nothing to clear up the professor's disappearance. She said that the case was still open.

Narcisazo's wife Altagracia Ramirez stated that the most important part of the Court sentence was the fact that it ordered the Dominican State to keep investigating the case. Speaking on the program Cuentas Claras, she said that she was happy with the sentence. She believes that her husband's disappearance was somehow linked to his participation in a meeting at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo where he condemned police and military personnel who had been awarded contracts worth millions by the Balaguer government, even though they were not engineers.

Lawyer Nasef Perdomo confirmed that the sentence was not open to appeal.
