President Leonel Fernandez is scheduled to leave tomorrow, Tuesday, 10 April, to take part in a United Nations debate on financial speculation on Wednesday. The decision to hold these debates was reached at the UN on 22 December 2011. The President's agenda includes attendance at the 9:30am session followed by another on Futures Markets at 10:30am. In this panel discussion, Fernandez will speak on Adopting Policies to Combat Excessive Food Price Volatility and Related Commodities Financial Markets. Fernandez is scheduled to speak at the closing of the two discussions, accompanied by 66th General Assembly president Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, according to a report from the Presidency.

He is also scheduled to visit the Escuela Hermanas Mirabal and meet with members of the Dominican expatriate community in New York.

On Thursday, 12 April, he will meet with United Nations Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon.

That afternoon he travels to Miami, Florida, from where he will fly to Cartagena, Colombia for the 6th Summit of the Americas, sponsored by the Organization of the American States. Prior to that event, he will have a working breakfast with members of the Central American Integration System (SICA). At 8pm, he is scheduled to attend a dinner in honor of visiting statesmen hosted by the President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos.

On Sunday, 15 April he is scheduled to sign the Cartagena Declaration, before returning to Santo Domingo arriving at Las Americas Airport at 6:25pm.

The theme of the 6th Summit is "Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity", which focuses on the role of physical integration and regional cooperation as a means to achieve greater levels of development and to overcome the hemisphere's challenges in several key areas including poverty and inequalities, citizen security, disasters and access to technologies. The Summit, which occurs every three years, offers the opportunity for countries to jointly define a hemispheric agenda at the highest level to address urgent challenges and propel positive change.
