An estimated 200,000 people flocked the newly remodeled Guibia Plaza for people-watching, a stroll by the sea, or a plunge in the pools set up on the Malecon by the Municipality of Santo Domingo over the Easter Week vacation, as reported in El Dia. To prepare the beach-like ambience, the city government hauled truckloads of sand to Guibia, making it appear as a beach in the city. 12 large plastic pools were installed on the sand for the enjoyment of city residents. The pools were divided into 5 for children and 7 for adults.
For the "beach", the city government dumped 1,700 cubic meters of sand on the sea-fronting park.
Observers noted that Boca Chica beach was less crowded this year as many city residents chose to visit Guibia instead.
According to reports, the recreation area at Guibia was well organized and people kept to the rules of no alcoholic beverages or weapons within the area that was monitored by security forces at the entry point. In addition to the beach volleyball, pools and chaise-longues, the city government also organized activities like aerobics, children's games and artistic performances.
Daily attendance was estimated at 45,000. The busiest day was Good Friday, when an estimated 55,000 people visited.
The municipality said that the pools would be used for recreation in barrios throughout the year.
