Last week the Newlink Research group published the results of its poll carried out on 31 March and 1 April, with a margin of error of 3%. The telephone poll of 1,106 eligible voters revealed that PLD candidate Danilo Medina would win with 49.1%, followed by Hipolito Mejia with 44%, if the election were held on the polling day. This would mean a second round would have to be held. However, the polling company said that their research shows an upward trend for Medina that means that by election day, 20 May 2012, he would win with 51.3%, enough to avoid a second round. The polling company says that in the unlikely case of a second round, Medina would win with 50.7% with 43% for the PRD candidate, as reported in Diario Libre.
