The PLD-majority Senate approved a loan for US$38.5 million to partially finance the completion of the Autopista del Coral highway that links La Romana to Punta Cana in the east, as reported in Diario Libre. BNP Paribas had arranged the 10-year financing with US Eximbank, the US government export credit agency. Odebrecht, the Brazilian engineering contractor, is responsible for completion of the highway, under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Works.
As reported in Costasur News, the 70km highway that was begun in October 2009 is set for completion in July.
In October 2010, the Senate had already approved US$54 million from the US Eximbank for the highway.
The highway is estimated to cost US$360.7 million, up from US$272.3 million in 2010, when the first loan was approved.
