The Ministry of Public Health says that 20 people are suspected of having died of leptospirosis during the first three months of the year.
Meanwhile the number of cases continues to rise with 264 up to 31 March, according to a report from the Public Health Ministry's General Epidemics Office.
The provinces where most cases of the disease have been reported in recent months are Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo), Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, San Cristobal and Elias Pina. In addition a green alert was posted for the National District and San Jose de Ocoa in the last week of March.
El Caribe reports that dengue is also on the increase with 500 cases registered this year, including two deaths, compared to 414 over the same period in 2011.
