An inspection of the beaches at Bavaro was carried out by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Pedro Morillo, regional environmental director Julio Aramis Mora, Navy supervisor Napoleon Casilla Vincente and the heads of Amet and Politur, Minoru Matsunaga and Rafael Sosa Dominguez, along with environmental prosecutor Altagracia Perez Ynirio.

They identified a series of problems including the destruction of the coral reefs, boats anchored within 60 meters of the beach, illegal fishing, and water sports businesses without sewage and wastewater treatment systems.

According to the authorities, the damage to the coral, more than three centimeters depending on the area, has caused erosion of the beach area, up to 40 meters in the case of hotel Carabela and a third of the beach in the case of the hotel Barcelo Dominican Beach.

Regional environmental director Julio Aramis Mora warned boat owners and excursion organizers that they had to stop dumping oil and fuel into the sea as it was damaging marine life and the coral reef.

The authorities detected a new business consisting of boat taxis that take tourists from one part of the beach to another, using a license issued for other purposes.

The commission, headed by Deputy Minister Morillo said that the first stage of clearing the beaches would concentrate on 60 meters of beach and 60 meters of ocean, but boats anchored more than 60 meters from the seafront would not be checked at the moment.
