Yesterday morning the police issued a writ against the ex major league baseball player, Vladimir Guerrero, who is accused of assaulting a police major in a discotheque in Nizao, owned by the player's family.

Guerrero then gave himself up to the police in Bani at 8:30am and at 2:30pm was subsequently taken before a judge to hear the terms of his remand.

Half an hour after appearing before the prosecutor, he was freed. Also present at the hearing was Senator Wilton Guerrero who presumably mediated to enable the baseball player to go free.

Accused alongside Guerrero were four other people, who, according to the police were his bodyguards and others involved in the incident.

On leaving the court, Vladimir Guerrero would only say that he was going home, nothing had happened and he had nothing more to say.

He has to return to the Prosecutors office today when it will be decided whether or not he will face charges.

The problem appears to have begun at 10pm before when, according to the police, there had been a fight in the discotheque where someone had been stabbed and the police were called. Two hours later the police received calls saying that the music was too loud and Major Pena Rojas decided to go personally. He said that there was a discussion with the baseball player who ripped his shirt while his security guards hit the major. Police reinforcements then arrived and arrested Julio Guerrero, the baseball player's brother, two cousins and a discotheque employee. The Major then left and reported the case to General Juan Ramon de la Cruz Martinez, head of the southern region, who took charge of the situation.

The police spokesman, General Maximo Baez Aybar, confirmed yesterday that Major Pena Rojas had a medical certificate recording the injury he sustained at the hands of Vladimir Guerrero.

Police chief Major General Jose Armano Polanco Gomez warned that even though baseball players are rich and famous, they should respect the laws and the authorities. He said that he deplored the player's violent action and said that he did not understand that the police were there to impose order, and that Major Renato Pena had acted with prudence and not in an uncontrolled manner as Guerrero had done.

However, Vladimir's brother said that he had had to defend himself as Renato Pena had started to draw his gun, and Vladimir had pushed him, no more than that. He had no idea why the police had said that his brother was fleeing from justice as it was only a minor incident. Both the baseball player's relatives and his lawyer, Polibio Rivas stated that Renato Pena was also drinking alcohol in the discotheque. On Wednesday, 11 April, charges against Guerrero were dropped by the Bani prosecutor. Guerrero's lawyer Polibio Rivas told reporters that during questioning it was established that the incident was "a row among friends."

Vladimir Guerrero was chosen on nine occasions to play in the All Stars Games of Major League and in 2004 was the American League's Most Valuable Player. Now, at the age of 38, he is a free agent, and has kept active with baseball academy work in the DR.
