The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an alert for the Dominican Republic and for the region to take precautions against a possible outbreak of dengue fever. Lilian Reneau-Vernon, the PAHO representative in the country said that she had information showing an increase in the number of cases of dengue in the Dominican Republic, as well as in the region. For this reason she called on the authorities to take the measures needed for preventing deaths. She also noted that leptospirosis has been controlled despite several deaths.

In response, Deputy Public Health Minister Jose Rodriguez Aybar noted that the country is redoubling its efforts to reduce the incidence of dengue, which this year has shown a 19% increase. In the first quarter of this year 500 suspected cases were reported, with two deaths and 39 cases of hemorrhagic dengue. Last year there were 414 cases and no deaths. He added that the recent rains and conditions in Haiti could have contributed to the increase.
