Yesterday, Wednesday, 11 April, another small craft reportedly struck a reef off the northeast coast near Miches and capsized. Some local news reports mention 48 persons were on the boat that set off to sea near the community of La Vacama, some 44 kilometers from Miches. Other local news reports say that 70 people were on board.

At least 38 of them have been rescued alive, eight in a state of dehydration. Preliminary information from the Naval Station in Miches said that the 24-foot craft hit the reef and sank. Some of the survivors are being treated at the health center at Laguna de Nisibon. Hoy reports that two women, one Dominican and one Haitian were hospitalized in Laguna de Nisibon, while three people are under arrest at the Nisibon police station. Preliminary reports from the director of the Civil Defense in La Altagracia province, Amado Avila indicate that of the 48 passengers, 37 were Haitians and most were women. Some 20 people received medical attention, and three were hospitalized. One woman told Avila that the captain of the boat had told them they were too many, and the boat could capsize. After setting out to sea, despite having confirmed he would be able to complete the illegal crossing to Puerto Rico, he tried to return to shore. There are conflicting reports of events. As reported in Listin Diario, one of the Haitian women survivors said that two Navy men were on site when the boat left from Punta del Coco beach. They said they had paid US$2,000 for the trip.
