The Fourth Collegiate Court of the National District has sentenced two Canadians to 10 years in jail for trafficking in drugs in the Dominican Republic. They were found in possession of 71 kilos of cocaine.

Judges Pilar Rufino, Daniel Nolasco and Daira Medina sentenced Canadians David George Daniel Parker and Mauro Giuseppe to 10 years in jail and imposed a RD$200,000 fine on each, as reported in acento.com.do

In the same trial, another Canadian named as Oliver A. Willis and a Dominican former jail security officer Wendy Magdalena Abreu Polanco, who were also arrested in the case, were acquitted for lack of proof.

The group was arrested in an apartment building in the upscale Santo Domingo neighborhood of Piantini.

DNCD agents also confiscated 32 cell phones, a gun, US$49,900 in cash, a safety box, a money-counting machine and four cameras, and a vehicle. The judges ordered the confiscation of a Ford SUV and a Honda Acura. The drugs were found hidden in one of the vehicles, as reported in local media.

The drugs were confiscated as part of an international operation working with the Canadian Border Services Agency. The drugs were allegedly destined for Toronto.
