Lawyer Jose Antonio Evangelista Pimentel was riddled by gunfire yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, 11 April in the APH Plaza parking lot on 27 de Febrero Ave. in the Piantini area of Santo Domingo, as reported in Diario Libre. He was the legal representative of the former Spanish consul, Salvador Morella Badillo. Former consul Morella had filed a complaint for kidnapping and extortion against Francisco Alberto Carela Castro, the alleged head of a network that videotaped prominent individuals in motels for purposes of blackmail.
The request for opening the trial in this case is being heard in the Second Court of Instruction. Carela Castro is also in preventive custody for the case of the Santiago lawyer, Jordi Veras, but that trial has been rescheduled several times.
Evangelista Pimentel died from multiple gunshot wounds after being shot by persons unknown in a white Toyota Camry, when the victim got out of a gray Nissan Pathfinder. The victim was carrying a sum of money in dollars and pesos, which according to prosecutor Denny Silvestre added up to some RD$100,000.
The Scientific Police reported collecting 30 shell casings at the crime scene, and although he was not identified, it was reported that another person was wounded and two young people were detained for investigation, as witnesses to the incident.
