Civil Defense authorities in the province of Santiago reported flooding in Villa Gonzalez last night, Wednesday, 11 April, after the Arrenquillo River burst its banks, and in the Hoyo de Caimito where 500 homes were flooded. Dozens of families in the Hoyo de Caimito were waiting for the waters to subside in order to return to their houses and retrieve some of their belongings. The rise of the Yaque River has frightened many of the inhabitants of the lower parts of the city of Santiago.

Nonetheless, the head of the local Civil Defense, Francisco Arias, said that there is no risk whatsoever since the river is only releasing energy, and its volume was being increased by the rivers and streams that flow into it. In parts of Santiago and Espaillat provinces, some 259 houses were affected by the rains that fell yesterday, Wednesday, 11 April, over large areas of the northeast, according to the Emergency Operations Center (COE). In Santiago 194 houses were affected, 131 of which were located in the barrios of La Gloria, La Cacata, Monterico and La Otra Banda. Another 63 homes were flooded by the rising waters of the Licey River in the Arenoso and Batey sectors. In the meantime, 65 houses were affected by torrential rainfall and drainage problems in the barrios of La Soledad, El Rosario and Calat Number 1 and Number 2 in the province of Espaillat.

The COE has issued an alert for more flooding that may affect vulnerable areas. The rains are forecast to continue due to a low-pressure trough located over the central portion of the island, and the COE has issued alerts for 12 provinces. On Red Alert: Monsignor Nouel (Bonao), Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) and La Vega. Yellow Alert: San Cristobal (Villa Altagracia) and Monte Plata. Green Alert: Santiago, Maria Trinidad Sanchez (Nagua), Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris) especially the Lower Yuna Basin, Puerto Plata, Samana, Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo) and Montecristi.
