Yesterday, a group of around 60 people demanding that the Central Electoral Board (JCE) issue them with Dominican ID and voting cards (cedulas), protested outside the JCE building causing a large traffic jam at the intersection of Luperon Avenue and 27 Febrero, a major Santo Domingo traffic hub.
The Movement for Recognition, made up from people of Haitian descent who claim to be Dominican argued with the members of the Electoral Police who would not let them near the building.
A representative of the movement said that more than 2,600 people are affected by the lack of cedulas, and it is only because they are of Haitian descent that the JCE refuses to provide them. This prevents them from voting, working and going to university, as reported in El Caribe.
