The Minister of the Interior and Police, Jose Ramon Fadul, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz, the head of the National Police, Major General Jose Armando Polanco Gomez and the head of the National Drug Control Agency, General Rolando Rosado Mateo, spoke in the last of a series of forums entitled "Evaluation of the Dominican People" broadcast by Telemicro on Channel 5.

Polanco Gomez said that crime and violence rates have been reduced by more than 30% over the last 15 months and that homicides have reduced from 25 per 100,000 people to 19.

It was said that the unification of the security forces had been a key factor in the reduction of crime levels and Polanco Gomez said that the Dominican Republic was winning the war against organized crime, drug trafficking, violence and murder.

He added that President Fernandez had taken an active part in the fight against crime as seven months ago the National Police had been given 150 vehicles with radios, and more than 400 motorcycles.

National Drug Control Department (DNCD) director General Rolando Rosado Mateo spoke about the improvements in the fight against drug trafficking, saying that they had eliminated the bombardment of drugs in Dominican airspace and the main drug traffickers who operated here were now in jails either here or in Puerto Rico.

Rosado Mateo went on to say due to a clean up within the security forces 3,037 members of the Armed Forces, National Police and DNCD had been prosecuted. He said that in addition this month they would instigate a program sponsored by the British embassy where every member of the DNCD would have to undertake a lie detector test.

He said that the National Police were becoming more professional with more training and that the scientific branch of the Police was one of the best in Latin America.
