The Ministry of Public Health confirmed yesterday, Monday, 16 April, that 231 cases of suspected cholera have been reported in Santiago. Nevertheless, Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez reported that the preliminary results of the lab tests carried out on samples from the patients who were hospitalized with diarrhea in Tamboril were negative and that these patients were being treated with the same procedures established for cholera.

He said that the cases are linked to the use of contaminated water, caused by a break in the water mains of the Tamboril aqueduct as a result of the rains that affected the region. Rojas Gomez said that the outbreak of diarrhea in the communities of Canca in Tamboril and Ceiba de Madera in San Victor Moca are under control.

In the case of Tamboril, where the greatest number of cases was registered, he stated that controls are in place and that they are providing health services to everyone who has been affected. They used the occasion to call on the population to maintain the necessary hygiene conditions as a preventive measure against the disease.

Yesterday 39 patients with diarrhea and other symptoms of the disease were hospitalized in the Tamboril Public Hospital, which only has 28 beds.
