Lack of authority, negligence by parents, sexual, physical and verbal abuse are all ingredients that can lead a minor to end up with problems with the law. The Dominican Family Institute (IDEFA) says that for this to occur, along with social factors, the family is the primary place for the treatment of these individuals. "Criminals are shaped within the family," says IDEFA Board of Directors president Franz Heinsen. He points out that the diverse failures and strengths of the nuclear family unit tend to create the situation.
IDEFA executive director Luz Marina Cortazar told Diario Libre that social factors also play a role in the upbringing of children, for example the possibility of improvement, the social resources, and the environment in which they live.
Family therapist Pamela Vargas says that a child who is brought up in a rational family is unlikely to end up in conflict with the law, even if things are lacking.
Maria Teresa Delmudesi, an expert on the issue, said that the upbringing of children should include care, respect and the fulfillment of the rules that are imposed in the home. She said that a lack of love could be what sparks off rebellion in a child.
The specialists will be analyzing these factors during the VII Seminar on Alternatives for the Care of Adolescents in Conflict with the Penal Law, which will be held on Wednesday, 25 April at the Melia Hotel, and where they will also be presenting the programs currently being implemented in this country for the prevention and treatment of these children.
The IDEFA is the organization that created the decree that designated April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the country, during which they will be organizing a series of events.
